Having a single, undying purpose is the highest form of self-perfection. Call it your purpose, passion, calling, mission – whatever. It does not exist. And yet, there is a massive push from authors and influencers – like Oprah, Tony Robbins and Rick Warren – to have us believe that the only way to have a happy life is by discover our purpose. Here’s where I am calling bullshit.
Don’t get me wrong. You can be passionate, you can be purposeful, you can be mission-driven. But defining your self worth through any of those is a road to mass anxiety, stress and depression – and other outcomes far worse.
On the flip side, those that are the most fulfilled are those that are purposeless. They are the people that execute brilliantly, stay focused and have contentment with the present. My book is a condemnation of the explosive purpose movement, and a celebration of living a life without purpose. Because that’s where the real magic is. Does this resonate with you?
